#1のテーマとして何が良いかのと考えたのですが、とりあえず航空学生とは何かについてご説明した方が良いかなと思いましたので、今回は“航空学生”という制度についてお話ししていこうと思います。これからpilotへの道を目指そうと考えている方、また自分が何になりたいか迷っている方、そんな方々のお力になれれば良いなと思います。
I was thinking about what would be a good topic for #1, and I figured it might be best to start by explaining what an aviation cadets are, so in this post, I’d like to talk about the “aviation cadets” program in the JMSDF(Japan Maritime Self Defense Force). I hope this will be helpful for those of you who are thinking about pursuing a career as a pilot, as well as those of you who are still unsure about what you want to do.
航空学生制度〜Aviation Cadets program〜
まず、航空学生の制度についてです。
First, let’s talk about the Aviation Cadets Program.
自衛隊には航空学生という制度があって、この制度に合格するとpilotになるためのコースに進むことができるんです。しかも入隊直後から自衛官としての給料をもらいながらpilotを目指せます。航空大学校やpilotコースがある私大ではお金を払って訓練をしなければいけないので、この点は本当に嬉しい点の一つですね。
The Self-Defense Forces have a program called the Aviation Cadet Program, and if you’re accepted into it, you can advance to a course designed to train you to become a pilot. What’s more, you can work toward becoming a pilot while receiving a salary as a Self-Defense Forces officer right from the moment you enlist. Since you have to pay for training at the Civil Aviation College or private universities that offer pilot programs, this is definitely one of the most appealing aspects of the program.
ただし、受験をするにあたって気をつけないといけないことがあるので、その点だけ共有させてもらいたいなと思います。
However, there are a few things you need to be careful about when taking the entrance exam, so I’d like to share those points with you.
航空学生制度は、実は航空自衛隊と海上自衛隊の両方にあるんです。なので、受験をする時に希望を聞かれるのですが、自分が航空自衛隊の航空学生として入隊したいのか、もしくは、海上自衛隊の航空学生として入隊したいのかをよく考えておかないと後々大変なことになります。
The Aviation Cadets Program actually exists in both the Air Self-Defense Force and the Maritime Self-Defense Force. So, when you take the exam, you’ll be asked to state your preference—but if you don’t carefully consider whether you want to enlist as an aviation cadet in the Air Self-Defense Force or the Maritime Self-Defense Force, it could lead to serious problems down the road.
試験の中身とかについては防衛省のホームページを見ていただきたいのですが、空自と海自の違いだけ簡単にいうと。
For details on the exam itself, please check the Ministry of Defense’s website, but to briefly explain the difference between the Air Self-Defense Force and the Maritime Self-Defense Force:
・航空自衛隊の航空学生に合格→戦闘機(F-35等)、輸送機(B777等)、救難機(UH-60J等)
・Passed the Japan Air Self-Defense Force Aviation Cadet Exam → Fighter jets (F-35, etc.),transport aircraft (B777, etc.), search and rescue helicopters (UH-60J, etc.)
・海上自衛隊の航空学生に合格→哨戒機(P-1等)、救難機(US-2)、哨戒ヘリ(SH-60K)
・Passed the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Aviation Cadet Program → Patrol Aircraft (P-1, etc.), Search and Rescue Aircraft (US-2), Patrol Helicopters (SH-60K)
上記のとおり、搭乗する機体がまったく違いますし、活動内容も全く違います。
As mentioned above, the aircraft you’ll fly are completely different, and the nature of the work is entirely different as well.
ですので、航空学生を受験しようと思われている方は、どんなことをしたいのか、またどの飛行機に乗りたいか、っていうのをよく考えて受験された方が良いです！
So, if you’re thinking of applying to the Aviation Cadet Program, you should really think carefully about what you want to do and which type of aircraft you want to fly before taking the exam!
ちなみに、私はpilotになれるということ以外全く知らない状態で受験していました笑
By the way, I took the exam knowing absolutely nothing other than the fact that I could become a pilot (lol).
そして２次試験で海自に回されたという話を聞いて、初めて空自海自のそれぞれに航空学生制度があることを知りました(あの地本の人先に教えてくれよなって感じです。)。
And it wasn’t until I heard that I’d been assigned to the Maritime Self-Defense Force during the second round of exams that I first learned the Air Self-Defense Force and the Maritime Self-Defense Force each have their own aviation cadet programs (I was thinking, “Why didn’t that regional office person tell me that first?”).
経験値から言うと、空自の方が難しい(受かりにくい)っていうのはやっぱりありますね。
Based on my experience, it’s definitely true that the Air Self-Defense Force program is more difficult (harder to get into).
どんな勤務？〜What Kind of Work Style?〜
航空学生に入隊してからの話は今後ゆっくり進めていくとして、とりあえず将来どんな生活を送るのかについてざっくりお話をしようと思います。あくまでも海上自衛隊の航空学生の話で、しかも私の経験をお話ししますので、その点だけご注意いただければと思います。
I’ll go into more detail later about what it’s like to be an aviation cadets after enlisting, but for now, I’d like to give you a rough idea of what kind of life you can expect. Please keep in mind that I’m speaking strictly about aviation cadets in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, and I’ll be sharing my own personal experiences.
航空学生は将来幹部自衛官になって、pilotとして部隊の中核を担う存在になります。
Aviation cadets go on to become commissioned officers in the Self-Defense Forces and serve as the backbone of their units as pilots.
中核っていうとよくわからないかもですが、航空部隊でバンバンフライトしているイメージです。
The term “backbone” might be a bit vague, but think of them as the ones who are constantly flying missions in aviation units.
勤務時間は(もちろん多少の前後はありますが)、基本月曜日~金曜日で0800~1645の7時間45分勤務になります。そこに当直というのが(平日休日関わらず)月1~2回入ります。
Working hours are (though there are, of course, some variations) generally 7 hours and 45 minutes, from 0800 to 1645, Monday through Friday. In addition, there are on-call shifts (regardless of whether it’s a weekday or holiday) about once or twice a month.
フライトは、上記の平日の勤務時間でする感じです。
Flights generally take place during the weekday work hours mentioned above.
運動は時間を見つけて適度にする感じです(しない人はしないですし、する人は勝手にしてます)。
As for exercise, people try to find time to do it in moderation (some don’t do it at all, while others do it on their own).
自衛隊を退職した身ですが、私にとっては最高の環境でしたね笑
I’m a former Self-Defense Forces member, and for me, it was the best environment ever, haha.
好きなフライトもできて、運動もできて、正直そこまで難しいこともしていなかったですし(階級がそこまで高くないので、まず重い仕事は基本与えられないのもあります)、給料も自衛官の中では高い方になりますし。
I got to fly, which I love, and I got to exercise. Honestly, the work wasn’t that difficult (partly because my rank wasn’t that high, so I wasn’t usually assigned heavy-duty tasks), and the pay was on the higher end for Self-Defense Forces personnel.
ただ、やっぱり自衛官なので常に待機しないといけなくて、何かあった時は呼び出しを受けて出勤しないといけないですし、時間に関係なくフライトしないといけなかったのは正直きつかったですね。
However, since I was in the Self-Defense Forces, I had to be on call at all times. If something happened, I’d get called in and had to report for duty, and honestly, having to fly regardless of the time of day was pretty tough.
総じて、平時の時であれば、おすすめできる仕事かなって思います。
Overall, I think it’s a job I could recommend during peacetime.
